Crypto Kidnapping in NYC: Investor Accused of Torture

Hey, check this wild story out. So, there's this cryptocurrency investor, a guy named John Woeltz, who's 37. Get this, he's accused of doing some seriously messed up stuff to a business partner right in fancy Soho, New York. The story is he allegedly kidnapped the guy for three whole weeks! Can you even imagine?
Prosecutors are saying Woeltz shocked the poor guy with electric wires. Yeah, that's right, electric wires. And get this, they even say he dangled him over a staircase. Why? To try and get him to spill his Bitcoin password. It's like something out of a movie, but totally not in a good way.
Woeltz got arrested back on May 23rd, court records show. According to some court papers, an unnamed guy told the cops in New York City that Woeltz and another dude, William Duplessie, took his phone and passport back on May 6th. They wanted his password so they could steal his cryptocurrency. Man, that's some nerve.
Apparently, both Woeltz and Duplessie haven't said if they're guilty or not yet. Their lawyers aren't talking either. Local news folks have been calling Woeltz a crypto investor, and they're saying the guy who got kidnapped is Italian. Both of them supposedly had some connection to a crypto hedge fund in New York. The New York Times even reported on it, citing some police stuff they saw.
When the victim said no to giving up his password, Woeltz and Duplessie supposedly started beating him up bad. They tied his wrists, hit him in the head with a gun, and even threatened to hurt his family. That's according to the complaints against them. It sounds absolutely terrifying.
Luckily, after weeks of this nightmare, the guy managed to get away. Duplessie was arrested on Tuesday, and he's got a hearing on Friday. Both of these guys have been ordered to stay locked up by the judges. Woeltz is supposed to show up in court on June 11th. It makes you wonder, what drives people to do things like this?
