Taiwan's Love Affair with Jensen Huang: It's 'Jensanity'!
Okay, so get this. Wherever the big boss of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, pops up in Taiwan, it's like a rock concert! Seriously, people are just totally obsessed. Reporters and adoring fans follow him everywhere, just hanging on his every word. They even stretch out their arms hoping to get him to sign stuff like books, posters, maybe even a baseball! It's kinda wild.
You know, Jensen was actually born in Taiwan, in a cool old city called Tainan, before he moved to the States when he was nine. He's in Taipei this week for this big tech show called Computex, and everyone's been watching his every move since his plane landed on Friday. I mean, one woman even yelled out "Jensen I love you!" in English while he was greeting a crowd outside a restaurant Saturday night. He was having dinner with some of the top tech guys from Taiwan, like from the chip giant TSMC. Local news even called it the "trillion dollar dinner" because of all the huge companies represented.
When Reuters asked him about all the crazy love he gets in Taiwan, he just said he loves coming here and seeing everyone and really appreciates the support. He said people are super kind. Last year, when he was in Taipei for Computex, some media even called it "Jensanity" because of how devoted everyone is when he visits. It's definitely a thing!
Nvidia's even got this pop-up shop selling stuff with his face on it, like playing cards and shirts. His colleagues at Nvidia are apparently kinda baffled by it 'cause he's usually not noticed as much at similar events in the US. And his bodyguards? They're working hard trying to keep reporters and fans from mobbing him! One bodyguard even told reporters to back off while Jensen was handing out fried ice cream to fans outside the restaurant the other night. By the way, he and his guests ate rice noodle soup and this famous Taiwanese whisky called Kavalan. A 21-year-old student named Hsu Han-yun, who got Jensen's autograph outside the restaurant, said he's really inspired Taiwanese young people like her. She thinks we should all learn from what he's doing. Pretty cool, right?
After that dinner, can you believe he rushed off to the opening of the World Masters Games? It's kinda like the Olympics but mostly for athletes over 30. He was a special guest there along with a famous boxer and a well-known Taiwanese actor-director. His being there even caused a little bit of drama with the presidential office. Some politicians from the other side were complaining that the Vice President was only showing up at the last minute to kinda tag along because Jensen was going to be there. But the Vice President's office said she didn't even know he was going when she confirmed she would be there, and anyway, their security had checked out the place a month ago. So, maybe that whole thing was a bit of a misunderstanding, idk?
The Taiwanese media coverage has been so intense, even a government department had to step in to clear something up over the weekend. They wanted to set the record straight on how much it costs to park his private jet at the airport in Taipei. The transport ministry said it would be about T$95,562, which is around $3,167, if he stayed for six days. They even added that the number of over T$60,000 that some media reported was wrong and that nobody had even asked them or the airport about it. They sounded a little bit annoyed, tbh! In the end, the jet, which is run by a company called VistaJet, actually left Taipei on Saturday afternoon and flew to Honolulu. So, that whole parking cost debate was maybe a bit much?
